ID Released For Man Pulled From Lake Mahopac After Kayak Overturns

The man whose body was pulled from the water after police say his kayak overturned in Lake Mahopac has been identified.

On Monday, July 22 at 1:40 p.m., the Town of Carmel Police received a report of a missing 55-year-old Mahopac resident, know ID'd as Richard Dudyshyn, Carmel Police Chief Michael Cazzari said.

A search of the area around Dudyshyn's South Lake Boulevard home found his kayak overturned in Lake Mahopac, according to Cazzari. 

The Carmel Police Department Marine unit began a search of the lake near the kayak and the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department Dive Team was requested. The Drive Team entered Lake Mahopac and recovered the body of Dudyshyn, said Cazzari. 

He was pronounced dead at Putnam Hospital Center at 3:26 p.m., according to Cazzari.

An autopsy was performed by the Putnam County Coroner’s office with the preliminary cause of death ruled to be a drowning. 

The investigation remains open as police detectives continue to conduct interviews and the medical examiner awaits the toxicology report before making a final determination.

It was the second time in as many days a middle-aged man drowned in a lake in Putnam County.
